5.2.1 Setting the Dialogue Level
Asthemixisnearingcompletion,usethedialoguelevelindicatorsinDolbyRemote570
showninFigure 52duringarepresentativeperiodofspeechtoselecttheDialogueLevel
valuefortheprogram.Themeasuredvalueoftheaudioprogramappearsinyellow;the
DialogueLevelvaluesetinthesof tware
appearsingreen.

Inmostcases,selectingandmeasuringarepresentativeperiodofspeechwithinthe
programwillserveasagoodexampleoftheoveralldialoguelevelthroughoutthe
program,providedgoodmixingpracticesareobserved.Insomecasessuchas
documentaries,locationsound,andsoon,itmaybedifficulttomatch
thedialoguelevel
fromsectiontosection,andwhilethedialoguelevelindicatorontheDP570canhelp,your
earsarethebesttool.
TodetermineaDialogueLevelvaluefortheprogram,useshorttermmeasurementsas
theyprovideameasurementoveratensecondperiodofprogramaudioand
donot
averagethemeasurementoveralongperiodoftime.Formoreinformationontheshort
andinfinitetermmeasurementmodes,seeMeasuringtheAverageLoudnessofIdentified
Clipsonpage 31.
PressingtheAcceptbuttonresetstheDialogueLevelparameterwithintheoutput
metadatastreamfeedingdownstreamequipmenttoequal
theyellowvalue.Thegreen
numberchangestothevalueselected.
5.2.2 Monitoring the Dialogue Level
Asyoumix,checkthedialoguelevelindicator—theyellownumbersshowninFigure 52—
frequentlytobesurethattheprogramstayswithinacceptablelimits.
OnceaDialogueLevelvaluehasbeenselected,eithershorttermorinfinitemeasurements
canbeuseddependingonyourpreference.Again,seeMeasuringtheAverageLoudness
of
IdentifiedClipsonpage 31tounderstandthedifferencesbetweenthem.
Note:For5.1programming,themeasurementchannelshouldbesettoCenter,asmostof
theimportantspeechcontentwilloccurinthischannel.MeasureboththeLeftand
Rightchannelsofstereoinput.
