InadditiontotheDRCprofile,metadatacanlimitsignalpeakstopreventclippingduring
downmixing.Thismetadata,knownasoverloadprotection,isinsertedbytheencoderonly
ifnecessary.Forexample,considera5.1‐channelprogramwith
signalsatdigitalfull‐scale
onallchannelsbeingplayedthroughastereo,downmixedline‐leveloutput.Withoutsome
formofattenuationorlimiting,theoutputsignalwouldobviouslyclip.Correctsettingof
theDialogueLevelandDRCprofilesnormallypreventsclippingandunnecessary
applicationofautomaticoverloadprotection.
D.5 Downmixing
DownmixingisafunctionofDolbyDigitalthatallowsamultichannelprogramtobe
reproducedoverfewerspeakerchannelsthanthenumberforwhichtheprogramis
optimallyintended.Simplyput,downmixingallowsconsumerstoenjoyaDVDordigital
televisionbroadcastwithoutrequiringafull‐blownhometheatersetup.
Note:DRCprofilesettingsaredependentonanaccuratedialoguelevelsetting.Improper
settingofthedialoguelevelparametermayresultinexcessiveandaudible
applicationofoverload‐protectionlimiting.
