4 COMMAND/POST Upgrade Guide for HP-UX Systems
Important Upgrade Information to Consider
The entire upgrade process should be carefully planned and scheduled. The majority of
planning and preparation is associated with upgrading the operating system, installing
COMMAND/POST, and particularly with scheduling systems to be down for operating system
upgrades and allowing for COMMAND/POST unavailability during upgrade and installation
processing.
For example, during preinstallation and postinstallation script processing, both
COMMAND/POST and the Sybase database are stopped. No alerts are processed until the
scripts have completed processing and COMMAND/POST is restarted. In addition, no alerts
are processed during the time when workstations are being upgraded and when
COMMAND/POST 4.1 is being installed.
The steps associated with each upgrade task take from one-half to one full day to complete,
depending on the function of the workstation within the COMMAND/POST system. In
addition, the planning and preparation work required before performing any tasks can take
several days overall.
For example, installing the HP-UX operating system can take several hours to half a day,
depending on the speed of the workstation. However, the following subtasks can add hours to
this one task in the upgrade process:
Ensuring that adequate system requirements are met for each workstation’s function
within the COMMAND/POST system
Scheduling a workstation for upgrading
Determining the hard disk partition sizes for each workstation
Preparing the partition information for use during the upgrade process
Applying required and recommended patches after the upgrade
Testing the workstation to ensure that user and application access is restored
BMC Software strongly recommends that you review all the tasks documented in the
COMMAND/POST Upgrade Guide for HP-UX Systems so you can plan, prepare, and schedule
appropriately.
Upgrading to New Hardware
The preinstallation script backs up both the database and COMMAND/POST configuration
and creates upgrade files in a default directory /home/u/NetCmmnd/upgrade. The files in
this directory are used in the postinstallation script to restore the COMMAND/POST
environment under 4.1.
If the upgrade demands a new physical workstation for the rmdhost, the files in
/home/u/NetCmmnd/upgrade must be mounted to the 4.1 rmdhost workstation prior to
COMMAND/POST 4.1 requires a vg00 of 3 gigabytes.
