PLAYBACK
Adjusting the tonal quality
Use this feature to adjust the balance of bass and treble for
the front L/R and center speaker channels.
1 Press TONE CONTROL on the front panel
repeatedly to select TREBLE or BASS.
2 Rotate the PROGRAM selector to adjust the
high-frequency response (TREBLE) or the
low-frequency response (BASS).
3 Press TONE CONTROL repeatedly to select
BYPASS and cancel the tone control.
If you increase or decrease the high-frequency or the
low-frequency sound to an extreme level, the tonal quality of
the surround speakers may not match that of the front L/R and
center speakers.
TONE CONTROL is not effective when THX (see page 38) or
PURE DIRECT (see page 39) is selected, or when
MULTI CH INPUT is selected.
Muting the sound output
Use this feature to mute the sound output.
1 Press MUTE on the remote control.
The MUTE indicator flashes in the front panel
display.
2 Press MUTE again (or press VOLUME +/–) to
resume the sound output.
The MUTE indicator disappears from the display.

You can adjust how much the muting function reduces the sound
output (see page 80).
Using SILENT CINEMA
Use this feature to enjoy multi-channel music or movie
sound, including Dolby Digital and DTS surround,
through ordinary headphones. SILENT CINEMA
activates automatically whenever you connect headphones
to the PHONES jack while listening to CINEMA DSP or
HiFi DSP sound field programs. When activated, the
SILENT CINEMA indicator lights up in the front panel
display.
SILENT CINEMA is ineffective in the following cases:
– MULTI CH INPUT is selected as the input mode.
– PURE DIRECT is selected.
– A 2ch Stereo program is selected.
– This unit is in the STRAIGHT mode.
