Glossary
Analog
Audio signals produced from L/R audio output terminals of
general equipment is called analog audio.
CPPM (Content Protection for Prerecorded
Media)
This is the copyright protection technology which prevents file
copy of DVD audio.
Decoder, Decode
Decoder is the device to enable us to hear audio data that is
encoded on DVD, etc., as a normal audio signal. This process
is called Decode.
Deep Color
This unit incorporates HDMI™ (V.1.3 with Deep Color)
technology that can reproduce greater color gradation (4096
steps) when connected to a compatible TV.
You can enjoy exceptionally rich, natural-looking colors, with
smooth, detailed gradation and minimal color banding.
[A lower color gradation (256 steps), without deep color, will be
reproduced if connected to a TV which does not support deep
color.]
Digital
DVD recorders, Blu-ray Disc/DVD players, and CD players are
usually equipped with digital output terminals. Connect through
the digital terminal to enjoy digital surround systems such as
Dolby Digital and DTS.
Dolby Digital
Digital audio compression technology developed by Dolby
Laboratories, Inc. Compatible with surround sound as well as
2-channel stereo sound. With this technology, you can keep
massive amount of audio data efficiently.
Dolby Digital +
Improved version of Dolby Digital. It offers higher-audio
quality, support for multi-channel (5.1-channel and more) and
increased bitrates.
Dolby Digital Surround EX
Improved version of Dolby Digital. You can playback 6.1-channel
sound by adding surround center to 5.1-channel compatible
with Dolby Digital.
Dolby Pro Logic
/Dolby Pro Logic

This technology converts any 2-channel source recorded
including Dolby surround into 5.1/7.1 or 6.1-channel sound with
more realistic sound effects. You can enjoy old movies recorded
in conventional 2-channel sounds (excluding monaural sounds)
as they are converted to dynamic 5.1/7.1 or 6.1-channel sound.
Dolby TrueHD
Dolby TrueHD is an advanced version of MLP lossless method
used for DVD audio. This is a high-quality audio method which
enables complete playback of audio data made through a
mastering studio.
Dolby TrueHD can only be used for Blu-ray Disc, etc, but is not
applicable to DVD audio format.
DTS (Digital Theater Systems)
Surround system used in most movie theaters. Separation
works well between channels, resulting in realistic surround
effects.
DTS 96/24
This is higher-quality DTS with 96 kHz/24 bit and used for
DVD-Video. 48 kHz/24 bit playback is possible on systems
incompatible with DTS 96/24 due to backward compatibility.
DTS-ES
Improved version of DTS. You can playback 6.1-channel sound
by adding surround center to 5.1-channel.
DTS-HD
Audio technology enhanced in sound quality and functions
based on DTS (used at movie theaters). You can playback
DTS-HD sound as DTS on conventional AV amplifiers due to
backward compatibility.
Depending on the encoding methods and bitrates, DTS is
classified into three types: DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD
High Resolution Audio and DTS Digital Surround.
The format itself supports up to 2048 channels, but the
maximum number of channels for next-generation DVD (Blu-ray
Disc, etc.) is 8ch (7.1ch).
Dynamic range
Dynamic range is the difference between the lowest level of
sound that can be heard above the noise of the equipment and
the highest level of sound before distortion occurs.
HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface)
HDMI enables you to transmit digital audio and video signals
using a single cable.
You can also transmit control signals using HDMI connections.
LPCM (Linear PCM)
This is one of the PCM methods and the uncompressed audio
signal encoded digitally. This method is used for music CD, etc.
Multi-channel LPCM signals used for Blu-ray Disc, DVD audio,
etc. enable playback with higher-sound quality.
Optical
Using optical fiber cable for digital signal input/output from
DVD, CD, etc., provides better sound quality for playback or
recording compared to analog.
PCM (Pulse Code Modulation)
This is one of the methods that enables analog sounds to be
converted to digital sounds.
Sampling frequency
Sampling is the process of converting the heights of sound
wave (analog signal) samples taken at set periods into digits
(digital encoding).
Sampling frequency is the n
umber of samples taken per
second, so larger numbers mean faithful reproduction of the
original sound.
Surround signal
Audio signal made up with front speakers, center speaker and
surround speakers.
x.v.Color
This is a name of products compliant with ISO Standard for
wider color space: “xvYCC”.
1080p
This is one of the digital hi-vision images.
1080 is the number of effective scanning lines that constitute
the actual screen. This enables every detail to be beautifully
expressed. Images are less flickered with progressive method
that scans in order from the top.
