THX Surround EX
THX Surround EX is a joint development of Dolby Laboratories and the THX division of Lucasfilm Ltd. This phenomenal new technology was
first heard in George Lucas’ long awaited "Star Wars: Episode I-The Phantom Menace". In the movie theatre, film soundtracks reproduced
with THX Surround EX technology are able to reproduce an extra "Surround Back" channel, which has been added during the mixing of the
programme. Now applied to home cinema, the THX Surround EX process decodes the surround back channel from the left and right surround channels on
specially encoded DVD movie releases. There are a total of 7 channels – front left and right, surround left and right, centre, surround back, plus subwoofer.
This additional surround back channel allows more detailed imaging behind the listener – sound appears to zoom over your head – and brings more depth,
spacious ambience and sound localisation than ever before.
By connecting an external amplifier (M-10X or A-509R) and surround back speakers with the VSA-E08, VSX-909RDS(-G) or VSX-859RDS(-G) – featuring
two-channel surround back pre-out terminals – THX Surround EX sources can be faithfully reproduced in the home with magnificent three dimensional sound
movement.
