Mechanical Installation
Installation Precautions
Do not place any loudspeaker into service in any vehicle without first properly securing all
components to the interior framework. Failure to do so may turn a component into a danger-
ous, flying projectile during a sudden stop or accident.
Do not drill or drive screws through any vehicle interior panel or carpeted floor before
inspecting the underside for potential punctures to control lines or cables. Be sure to avoid
all fuel lines, brake lines, electrical cables, or oil lines when planning installation.
Choosing a Location
For ease of installation, use factory locations that can be adapted to fit the speakers. This will
save considerable installation time and provide cosmetic integration. Avoid installing speakers
behind obstructive door pockets or trim panels. These locations can block midwoofer frequencies
and reduce output for a “harsh” or “hollow” sound.
Avoid locations behind thick stock fabric or cloth that will restrict output and reduce loudness.
Tweeters are especially sensitive to this type of location, since the short wavelengths produced are
easily absorbed by thick fabric.

Installing the HED Series Speakers
First, make sure all audio system power is off. Even though a speaker can be mounted in a
number of different locations, the most common one is usually a door panel. The following
instructions describe this type of installation.
1. After choosing a location on the door panel, carefully remove the trim panels to expose the
interior door structure. In most cases, you may need to remove a few screws (hidden under
trim pieces) to free the panel. If necessary, remove the window crank and door pull handle.
CAUTION: Use care when removing interior trim panels. Car manufacturers use a variety
of fastening devices that can be damaged by excessive force.
2. Carefully separate the door panel from the sheet metal with either a wide flat-blade screw-
driver, pry bar, or trim pad removal tool. If you run into problems, call your local car dealer
for some professional advice.
