Question About Sharper Image Speaker None

Just want to make sure all I do is plug my ipod in (and the music has been working to go through the speakers). Does it charge my ipod also? I only use it every so often so I haven't been able to tell. Does the power have to be on (lit up with that blue light). Probably a dumb question but I'm not good at this! ha ha
