0 Kathnow1958, I have had this same problem. I bought this unit back in fall of 2003 and when it did work it was an amazing system. Here I am almost 10 years later finding a solution to this problem. This unit over time stops playing Dual layer DVDs, which are pretty much standard. The unit only plays single layer discs or DVD-r/rw VCD and SVCD formats. To FIX this you must open the unit and clean the DVD lens manually. Disc cleaners do not work. Opening the unit is very easy. Remove two screws on each side of the unit totalling 4 screws. Then 3 screws on the back. Lift the top of the unit off. Inside you will see the DVD tray, it is secured by two machine screw on the aft part of the tray. Remove these two screws. Then press the eject button so the tray slides out, when the tray is open continue to pull the tray so that it comes off the unit. Once this happens the door motors will keep moving because its trying to close the tray that's no longer there. Then take a "Q"tip with some alcohol and rub it on the DVD lens, its located right behind the center spindle. Repeat as necessary until the "Q" tip seems to not contract any more dirt. Then test your unit before buttoning it up. Hopefully this works for you, it did for me after 6 years of it not working my unit is as good as new. AGAIN THIS WAS WHAT WORKED FOR ME, I ASSUME NO RESPONSIBILITY IF IT DOESN'T WORK FOR YOU, I'M JUST TRYING TO HELP.
