AUDIO STOPPED WORKING. sound is on, mute off, no sound

0 system manufactured in 2000. can hear clicks and crackles but no sound; volume of crackles seems to increase. had it on mute, then it wouldn't return to normal. nothing in audio setup helps. with mut on, closed captioning appears.
