I cannot open the CD drive - it makes a grinding noise. Have had the stereo for five years, so it's out of warranty.

5 It sounds like there is something plastic inside that has broken off and is stuck inside one of the gears. Remove the screws from the back and sides of the casing then slowly lift the casing off. You should have a clear view of the inside of the player at that point. You might be able to see what's causing your problems right away but can always plug it in while the case is off, just so you can physically see what is making the cd drive click or make noise. The screws used to hold the casing on should be Philips screws as well
