Before you begin Care and Maintenance
Cleaning the Exterior
• Disconnect the system from AC power before cleaning the exterior of the unit with a soft dust
cloth.
Handling Compact Discs
• Do not touch the signal surfaces. Hold by the edges, or by one edge and the hole.
• Do not affix labels or adhesive tape to the label surfaces. Also, do not scratch or damage the
label.
• Discs rotate at high speeds inside the player. Do not use damaged (cracked or warped) discs.
Cleaning Compact Discs
• Dirty discs can cause poor sound quality. Always keep discs clean by wiping them gently with a
soft cloth from the inner edge toward the outer perimeter.
• If a disc becomes dirty, wet a soft cloth in water, wring it out well, wipe the dirt away gently,
and then remove any water drops with a dry cloth.
• Do not use record cleaning sprays or antistatic agents on discs. Also, never clean discs with
benzene, thinner, or other volatile solvents which may cause damage to the disc surface.
Tape Care
• Don’t expose tapes to sunlight or store in hot places. High temperatures may warp the shell or
damage the tape itself.
• Keep cassettes in their boxes when not in use.
• Cassette tapes can be erased by magnetic fields produced by magnets, electric motors, electrical
transformers, and other devices. Keep tapes away from magnets and magnetic fields.
Cleaning the Tape Heads
Iron oxide particles from the magnetic tape can build up on the parts that come in contact with the
tape. These deposits can cause incomplete erasure, muffled playback sound, and might prevent
automatic stop.

Clean these parts
To clean a cassette tape, open the compartment
door, push the PLAY button and gently clean the
heads, capstan, and pinch wheel with a head
cleaner.
Always unplug the power cord before cleaning, and allow 30 minutes drying time when using a
liquid cleaner. Clean heads after every 25 hours of use.
• Demagnetize the head occasionally with a head demagnetizing cassette (available from many
audio equipment stores).
• Never use any metal objects on or near the tape heads.
Do not allow any cleaning material to fall into the tape assembly.
Troubleshooting Tips
Problem Solution
System doesn’t turn on • Make sure power cord is securely plugged into the AC power
outlet (or that the batteries in the remote control are fresh).
• Unplug the unit for a moment, and then plug it back in.
• Check the outlet by plugging in another device.
No sound • Adjust volume setting.
• Check for proper connection of speaker wires.
• Make sure you’ve selected the correct function: TUNER, TAPE, or
CD.
•
Make sure MUTE is not activated (Indicator POWER/STANDBY
flashes) To deactivate, press MUTE button on the remote.
No sound from one channel • Check for proper connection of speaker wires on the channel
(Left or Right).
Poor radio reception • Adjust the FM antenna wire for better FM reception.
• Rotate the unit to achieve better AM reception.
• Try turning off electrical appliances near the unit, such as hair
dryers, vacuum cleaners, or fluorescent lights.
CD doesn’t play • Make sure the tray contains a disc.
• Make sure that disc’s label is facing up.
• Make sure that Pause mode is not activated.
• Make sure DISC function is selected.
CD sound skips • Clean the disc (as explained in “Care and Maintenance”).
• Check disc for warping, scratches, or other damage.
• Check for vibration or shock that may affect the unit; move
system if necessary.
Distorted or noisy recordings • Inspect the recording head and clean it if necessary.
• Demagnetize recording head (as explained in “Care and
Maintenance”).
Remote control won't work • Make sure the unit is plugged into a working AC outlet.
• Press POWER button to assure that the system is set to POWER
ON mode (display is lit).
• Press the function button on the remote that activates the
desired component: TUNER, TAPE, or CD.
• Replace batteries if they are weak. Make sure that batteries are
installed in the directions indicated inside the battery chamber
of the remote control.
• Point the remote control directly at the SENSOR eye while
pressing buttons.
• Move closer to the unit while using the remote control.
• Make sure no obstacles are between the remote and the unit.
NOTE: When you initially plug in the unit and press Power ON, the CD drawer will
close if open; the disc tray rotates to position one (1).
Powering Up
Plug the power cord into an AC power outlet that accepts the polarized
plug, which has one blade wider than the other.
The standby indicator will light (even though the POWER button is off) to
show that the unit is plugged in and ready to operate.

Moisture Condensation
Just as moisture can form on the inside of windows on cold day, it can also form on the inside of
your stereo, causing it to malfunction.
If moisture forms inside this player, it may not operate properly. To correct the problem, turn off
the power and wait about 30 minutes for moisture to evaporate.
Location
These guidelines should be followed when setting up your system:
• Choose a level, solid, surface. Don’t place on a soft surface, such as carpeting or foam rubber.
• Choose a location away from direct sunlight, radiators, air ducts, and other sources of heat.
• Avoid locations that are subject to moisture, mechanical vibration, shock, or excessive dust.
• Make sure that the location has adequate air circulation. Good ventilation is essential to
protect the system from internal heat build up.
Speaker Placement
For optimal listening:
• Speakers should be placed at least six feet apart and facing the listener.
• Speakers should be placed at least two to three feet from the wall to avoid accentuated bass
response.
Speaker Hookup
For each speaker:
1. Press down on the tab to open the red terminal,
and insert the red wire (+) into the terminal.
2. Press down on the tab to open the black
terminal, and insert the black wire (–) into the
terminal.
Antennas
• The AM antenna is built in.
• The FM wire antenna is attached. Stretch it to its full length and adjust its position to
improve FM reception.
Headphones
To listen to your stereo with headphones (not included), use the 3.5 mm PHONES jack on the
front of the unit.

Loading and Playing Discs
1. Press the FUNCTION button until CD indicator lights.
2. Press the OPEN/CLOSE
button to open the CD drawer.
3. Place compact discs into the compartments. To rotate the tray and provide access to the back
compartment, press the DISC SELECT button on the front of the unit.
4. Press the OPEN/CLOSE (
) button again to close the CD drawer.
5. Select the disc you want to play first (DISC 1, DISC 2 or DISC 3) by pressing the DISC SELECT
button.
6. Use the SKIP/SEARCH buttons (
and
) to choose a track.
7. Press PLAY/PAUSE (
) to begin play (the current track number appears). Play starts with
the first track of the selected disc and continues sequentially through all remaining tracks of
all available discs.
The compact disc player then enters the STOP mode; if you want to play discs in a particular
sequence, place the disc to play first in compartment 1; the second in compartment 2, and the
third in compartment 3.
8. Press STOP/CLEAR (
) to stop disc play.
Playing and Loading Discs Simultaneously
You can open the disc tray without stopping the disc currently in play. Simply press
OPEN/CLOSE (
) and the tray opens, providing access to the two front disc compartments. Play
continues without interruption, while the other 2 (front) discs can be changed. If you open the
disc tray while a disc is playing but then press DISC SELECT, the disc tray will close, play stops and
the disc tray rotates to begin playing the next available disc.
PAUSE
To temporarily stop disc play during operation, press PLAY/PAUSE ( ). The Track number
blinks in the display.
Press PLAY/PAUSE (
) again to resume play.
SKIP
During disc play, or in the Pause or Stop modes, you can skip forward or backward to the
beginning of any selection on a disc by using the SKIP buttons.
Momentarily press one of the SKIP/SEARCH buttons (
and
) to move to the
beginning of a selection on the disc. To “skip” to another selection on the disc, repeatedly press
and release the buttons until the desired track number appears in the display.
SEARCH
During disc play, pressing and holding one of the SKIP/SEARCH buttons (
and
)
enables you to speed up or move quickly backward to any point on the disc. The disc material will
be audible, allowing you to scan for a favorite segment or skip a segment. Release the button
and normal play resumes.
Repeat
Press the REPEAT button for repeat play of all the discs; press REPEAT again to turn off the
feature.
Shuffle
Press the SHUFFLE button for automatic random play (the shuffle indicator light comes on). To
activate the shuffle feature, press PLAY/PAUSE (
) even if a disc is already playing.
Press SHUFFLE again to cancel shuffle play and return to normal play beginning with the track
currently playing.
Stop/Clear
Pressing the STOP/CLEAR ( ) button once terminates CD play and the display will indicate “—”.
All selected play modes are still retained, pressing the STOP/CLEAR button twice during play
mode, terminates CD play and all selected play modes are then cancelled.
Automatic Stop
When your recorder is operating in any mode and the end of the tape is reached, your unit will
automatically shut itself off and return buttons to their off position.

Using the Cassette Deck
Understanding the Buttons
If you know what each button does, it’s easy to figure out how to operate the tape deck.
RECORD — Press to record from the radio or CDs.
PLAY — Press to play cassettes.
REW — From stop mode, press to rewind the tape toward the beginning.
F. FWD — From stop mode, press to advance
the tape toward the end.
STOP/EJECT — Press to stop current tape activity, or to open the cassette compartment door when
no buttons are active.
PAUSE — Press to interrupt tape play or record mode. Press a second time to resume tape play or
tape record mode.
Playing Cassette Tapes
1. Press the FUNCTION button until TAPE indicator lights.
2. Press STOP/EJECT to open the cassette compartment door.
3. Insert the cassette by gently sliding it into the cassette carry compartment in the door with
the exposed tape downward, the full reel of tape to the left and, then, close the door. Note
that: an internal interlock prevents the cassette door from opening unless all controls are in
their off (up) position.
4. Close the door securely.
5. Press REW or F. FWD to move tape to the desired starting point.
6. Press PLAY to begin playing the tape.
Recording from Radio or Compact Disc
1. Insert a cassette tape into the tape deck.
2. Choose the function (TUNER or CD), and then set up for play.
3. Press the RECORD button to begin recording.
4. Press STOP/EJECT to end recording.
Using the REMOTE CONTROL
Installing Batteries
1. Slide the battery cover in the
direction of the arrow and lift the
door up.
2. Install 2 “AAA” batteries. Face
batteries in the direction indicated
on the back of the cover.
3. Close the cover and slide it back
into place.

Turning on the System
Press the POWER button to turn on or turn off the
system.
Volume
Press VOLUME ( or ) to increase volume or
decrease volume.
Press MUTE to suspend the output of sound. The
standby indicator light on the unit flashes when
MUTE is engaged; press MUTE again to restore
volume to previous setting.
Using the Radio
Press TUNER to select the radio as the source of
sound and use the controls on the main unit to select
band and station.
Playing Compact Discs
• Press CD to select the compact disc player as the
source of sound.
• Press PLAY/PAUSE to begin play of the current
disc.
• Press PLAY/PAUSE to pause play. Press again to
resume.
• Press
to skip to the start of the next track or
to skip to the start of the current track.
• Press
again to skip to the beginning of the
previous track.
• Press DISC SKIP to advance to the next available
disc in the disc tray.
• Press STOP to stop play.

• Any defect in material or workmanship.
For how long after the original purchase?
• One year.
• The warranty for rental units begins with the first rental.

• Provide you with a new, or at our option, a refurbished unit.

Headset Safety
• Do not play your headset at a high volume. Hearing experts advise against continuous extended
play.
• If you experience a ringing in your ears, reduce volume or discontinue use.
• You should use extreme caution or temporarily discontinue use in potentially hazardous situations.
• Even if your headset is an open-air type designed to let you hear outside sounds, don't turn up the
volume so high that you can't hear what's around you.
POWER ON
From standby mode, press and release the POWER button (located beside the tape compartment
door). In power on mode, the system can be operated by using the controls on the main unit or
the remote control.
Standby Mode
With the power on, press the POWER button and release to go into standby mode (the standby
indicator light comes on). From standby mode, you can turn on the system either by using the
remote control or by pressing the POWER button on the unit.
POWER OFF
From power on mode press and hold the POWER button (on the main unit) until the standby
indicator light turns off. Note that the system must be in power on mode before you can set it to
power off. If the standby indicator light is visible, press the POWER button on the main unit once
to switch to power on, and then press and hold to turn off the power. The remote control cannot
be used to put the system in power off mode.
Function Button
Use the FUNCTION button to switch among the available sources of sound CD, TAPE or
TUNER (radio).
Volume
Turn the VOLUME control to increase volume or to decrease volume.
The “MUTE” function is available only through the remote control. Press the MUTE button on the
remote control to suspend the output of sound. Press again to restore volume. The STANDBY LED
will blink when VOLUME is muted.
Bass Boost
Turn on BASS BOOST to enhance the bass frequencies at low-volume levels.

Tuning In Radio Stations
Choose the radio feature by pressing the FUNCTION button until the TUNER indicator light comes
on; then you can do the following:
• Slide the band switch to listen to AM or FM stations in either mono or stereo (STEREO
indicator lights when listening to FM stereo).
Note that AM stations are broadcast in mono only, and that the FM radio station must be
transmitting in stereo for you to receive it in stereo.
• Turn the TUNING dial to change the radio station.
• Adjust the volume, and bass settings.

Precautions
• Never open the cabinet under any circumstances. Never operate this product with the cabinet removed.
Any repairs or internal adjustments should be made only by a trained service technician.
• Do not touch the player with wet hands. If any liquid enters the player cabinet, take the player to a
trained service technician for inspection.
• This Compact Disc Player uses a laser to read the music on the disc. The laser mechanism corresponds to
the cartridge and stylus of a traditional record player. Although this product incorporates a laser pick-up
lens, it is completely safe when operated according to directions.
For Your Safety
The AC power plug is polarized (one blade is wider than the other) and only fits into AC
power outlets one way. If the plug won’t go into the outlet completely, turn the plug over and
try to insert it the other way. If it still won’t fit, contact a qualified electrician to change the
outlet, or use a different one. Do not attempt to bypass this safety feature.
Important Battery Information
• If you’re not going to use your remote control for a month or more, be sure to remove batteries because
they can leak and damage the unit.
• Dispose of batteries in the proper manner, according to federal, state, and local regulations.
• Any battery may leak electrolyte if mixed with a different battery type, if inserted incorrectly, if all
batteries are not replaced at the same time, if disposed of in fire, or if an attempt is made to charge a
battery not intended to be recharged.
• Discard leaky batteries immediately. Leaking batteries can cause skin burns or other personal injury.
